This course will enable fundraisers to feel more confident when reading accounts and reporting financial elements which are critical to their roles. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the key principles of financial reporting for charity, how to analyse and use charity accounts, and knowledge of tax and VAT areas that will impact them

  • Principles of fund accounting
  • Statutory requirements when reporting finances
  • How to explain and communicate accounts effectively
  • Using cost theory and management accounts to forecast effectively
  • VAT and Tax specific to fundraising projects.

This session will give you an overview of the statutory reporting requirements for charities and will highlight important areas including the different types of charity funds, how to recognise restricted and unrestricted income and your legal obligations for reporting on a charity’s fundraising activities and the related income raised.

Understanding management accounts

Learn what management accounts are, how they are used, and how to present them. Get guidance on different approaches to allocating costs and how to identify the full cost of activities to help you plan effectively and maximise income.




Tax & VAT

VAT & Tax can be managed to enhance your income. This session will outline the three key areas to consider:


Hear what trading activities are taxable and the rules that apply to fundraising activities when trading such as commercial sponsorship; cause related marketing (use of name and logo; charity of the year) and planning fund-raising events.

Gift Aid

Learn what can be gift aided and ensure you are meeting regulatory requirements around declaration wording and record keeping. Understand gift aid rules relating to benefits; membership and patron schemes and fundraising events.


VAT rules can be complex and difficult to navigate. This overview will focus on the key points fundraisers need to be aware of in relation to VAT. By the end of this section you will know where to apply zero rated reliefs, and when a donation is a true donation, along with hot to apply VAT to:

- Membership and patron schemes

- Challenge events

- Auctions

Written notice of cancellations up to 21 days before an event will incur a 25% administration fee. After this time period, a 100% cancellation charge will apply. Substitutions (i.e. name changes) for the course booked can be made free of charge.

CFG reserves the right to cancel any event two weeks prior to the event date. You will be entitled to a full refund or given the opportunity to transfer to an alternative date. However we regret that we cannot refund any travel or accommodation costs incurred by delegates. CFG accepts no liability if an event is cancelled or postponed for reasons beyond our reasonable control resulting from an act of God, governmental regulation, fire, war, terrorist activity or civil commotion.

It may be necessary for reasons beyond our control to change the date, time or the venue at any time prior to the event date. If this occurs you will be informed of changes and given the opportunity to cancel or transfer to an alternative date.
