Charity Finance Directors Group Prepare for PIU Response

29th January 2002

The Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) has created a new Policy Development Working Group to help prepare for the new challenges facing the sector in the light of the Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit Report (due in March); the Treasury Cross Cutting Review; and the Charity Commission consultations.

In addition to responding to the Government's agenda, the Policy Development Working Group will develop CFDG's policy work relating to the other challenges facing the charity sector including:
· The increasing number of public services being run by charities;
· The decreasing number of people donating to charities;
· The increased public desire to see measurable outcomes from the charity sector;
· Continuing information technology developments; and
· The move towards 'participatory approaches & stakeholder approaches'.

The new group will identify areas for the CFDG to develop policy work and produce policy papers representing members' views. It will respond to consultation papers and develop proactive policy campaigns. The new group will be Chaired initially by David Nussbaum, the Finance Director at Oxfam - one of the UK's largest charities.

The Policy Development Working Group will be composed of CFDG members with a view to ensuring that all interested CFDG's members are involved in the development of the Group's policy. Members of the Policy Development Working Group will be invited to represent the CFDG on a variety of policy committees and will be invited to attend meetings with senior politicians and opinion formers.

Shirley Scott, Chief Executive of CFDG said "We are constantly working to promote public education and confidence in the financial management of charities. This new Policy Development Working Group will help us achieve this aim and ensure that the decision makers and opinion formers get to hear about our members' ideas in this exciting time for charities."

The Group will have its first meeting on 22nd February 2002 in Camelford House, 87-89 Albert Embankment, London.
