CFDG hits the big 1000

24th September 2004

CFDG, the membership organisation for Charity Finance Directors, is celebrating the recruitment of its 1000th member.

"CFDG's success shows how much sector professionals appreciate help in keeping track of their complicated charity finances and reporting. To have a group of others to share ideas and solutions with is a great help and stops finance directors feeling isolated", says Paul Breckell, Chairman of the CFDG board of Trustees, himself Finance Director of the Church Mission Society.

Keith Ward, Group Finance Director of the City and Guilds of London Institute, has just become CFDG's 1000th member. Like many others, he was referred to CFDG by word-of-mouth. "I have worked exclusively in the commercial sector until now and realize that there are significant differences. The scope and remit of the finance function within a charity can be much broader and it will be useful to be part of a forum where I can exchange experiences and information with peers. I was interested when someone told me about CFDG, especially as I was relatively new to the sector."

From its early days in 1987 CFDG has grown to become an influential body in charity, accounting and government circles. It has members in three regional groups as well as its main London based membership. Being a member of CFDG can lead to many things. One former chair of the Group has just gone to work for the Barbados Heart Foundation, another is about to take up his post as Chief Executive of the Charity Commission and a third is a Charity Commissioner and Chair of the SORP Review Committee.

CFDG CEO Shirley Scott says, "We don't pretend all members will achieve such lofty status but they will certainly have the opportunity to develop good financial management in their charities".
