CFDG make public commitments to sustainability

12th August 2008

Sustainability is an issue no organisation can afford to ignore and the Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG) have taken steps to make public their commitments to sustainability. The sector umbrella group have launched a page on their website detailing their approach and commitments to sustainability.  The web page advances the transparency of CFDG’s work and forms part of the developing debate on sustainability in the sector.

CFDG CEO Keith Hickey says, “Our new web page highlights sustainability as a critical global issue, and shows how we are tackling this issue within CFDG. It is the responsibility of all organisations to tackle their impacts in environmental and social sustainability, but there is also a clear business case. As a critical issue across all sectors, organisations need to prove their commitment to sustainability in order to stay ahead of the curve and address the concerns of their stakeholders.

“At CFDG we are demonstrating a sustainable approach to our work in order to retain the confidence of our members, and thus our ability to aid and support them. For CFDG, sustainability action and reporting supports a debate around best practise whilst simultaneously ‘walking the walk’ on these issues in order to foster accountability and transparency.”

On the web page CFDG have detailed their approach to sustainability, and the policies and plans which back it up. They have also signed up to the Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change, started up by Every Action Counts, which is "a statement of intent from Third Sector organisations to tackle the issue of climate change by taking action in our organisations and in our communities."

Finally, the website also details CFDG’s ongoing work on sustainability reporting guidance for the sector. The guidance will give advice not only on how and where to account for work on sustainability, but also how practically to take forward work in this area. CFDG are looking to publish the guidance in spring 2009.
