CFDG IT Conference Climate Change and Virtual Worlds

7th February 2008

Climate change and its impact on IT is just one of the themes being examined at this year's annual CFDG IT Conference on 13th March. This year's conference, which is open to anybody who has strategic responsibility for their organisation's IT, focuses on new IT trends on the horizon and how they might impact on charities. With general acceptance that climate change is happening, there is public expectation that all organisations should play their part in reducing their impact on the environment. IT in various forms consumes at least 2% of UK generating output and could be double that. Francis Rottenburg from the Carbon Trust will look at how energy cost and legislation could have major impacts on IT operating costs over the next ten years.

The main keynote speech comes from Professor Clive Holtham at Cass Business School who will look at 3D v 2D worlds and their limitations and potential for accountants. All accounting systems whether computer or paper based are 2D virtual worlds so do we really need 3D virtual worlds such as Second Life?

The conference, taking place at the Royal College of Surgeons, will also look at other strategic issues through charity case studies including how charities have implemented new technologies. Amongst others Barnardos will be sharing their top tips on how to manage sourcing, Oxfam will be looking at IT risk and the art of mitigation and Christian Aid will share a case study on how they build a truly collaborative intranet based on Sharepoint 2003.

Laura James, Events Manager at CFDG said: "We are sure the combination of technological trends and strategic focus will offer food for thought and help charities to understand the possible impact and implications of IT"

This event is supported by CFDG subscriber companies Touchstone Group and Sayer Vincent.
