“Rough period of austerity ahead” but also ”radical options” and “new opportunities” – Geoff Mulgan to address CFDG conference on the outlook for the charity sector

11th May 2010

Geoff Mulgan, Director of The Young Foundation and former Director of Policy for Tony Blair and Chief Adviser for Gordon Brown, will speak about the recent election and the emerging climate for charities, as the keynote speaker at the Charity Finance Directors’ Group Annual Conference.
This year’s Conference, entitled ‘Austerity and Innovation,’ will be an invaluable opportunity for charity finance professionals to hear the latest on how the sector has been impacted by the recent recession, and about new ideas regarding the potential for adaption to these changes.
Ahead of his speech Geoff Mulgan says “even if there is a healthy recovery, charities face a very difficult few years, as sharp cuts in public spending hit some of the best charities hard. Many charities – and most of the public – haven’t yet appreciated just how severe and rough the coming period of austerity will be.”
In line with the sentiment of the event’s title he will also highlight the emergence of new opportunities for innovation, stating “there will be radical options for reshaping services to reap economies of scale, scope and flow,” and that “there will also be new opportunities for charities to make their case, showing how they can mobilise responsibility, or commitment in ways that other sectors can’t. Past crises accelerated innovation and this one will too.”
CFDG is pleased to be leading the way in developing practical advice and best practice for the area of charity finance. Alongside workshops based around hot topics, the latest updates in regulation and personal development, the upcoming conference offers an exciting setting for ground-breaking discussion regarding options and tools the sector can utilise in response to the financial crisis.
The conference will be held on 18 May at the QEII centre in London. For more information and to book your place at the conference please see here.

The conference is kindly sponsored by Grant Thornton and PS Financials.
