CFG writes to Skills Minister about Apprenticeships Levy

3rd December 2015

CFG have written to the Skills Minister, Nick Boles MP, on making the apprenticeships levy work for the voluntary sector. The Levy will apply to large employers across all industries, so will impact on large charities.

Key points raised in the letter include:

  • In recognition of the voluntary sector’s status as a major employer, charities must be represented on the board of the Institute of Apprenticeships.
  • The levy should be made available to charities to develop new apprenticeships and recruitment as well as paying for direct costs. This will help to ensure that they can provide meaningful, high quality apprenticeships, thereby attracting young people to the sector.
  • The government should engage with the wider question of how the levy interacts with the principles which underpin the use of charitable resources.

CFG will continue to engage with government to ensure that the apprenticeship levy works for the charity sector over the long term.
